Phone Bills
One of the most expensive things you will have to pay for being a freight broker, is your telecommunications bill.
Be it your Internet fees, your mobile phone fees, and your office phone fees; they add up, and they are expensive.
Remember in every business, there are 2 goals: First one is to make money. The second, is to reduce spending.
Do deep research on any offers your telecommunications company has to offer to you on calling nationwide and worldwide before you sign on any contract. As a freight broker, your calls are one of the main ways of communication with other carriers and such. Therefore, keep every call cheap or even free if possible.
Some ways I recommend:

Skype
Skype – Skype is a free PC to PC calling software, that allows you to communicate easily and best of all, it’s free! Though calling land lines you will be charged. Note: make sure your Internet speed is capable of supporting the calls, otherwise you will definitely not be pleased with the quality of the call… this might make you lose business! Be very wary.
Check out your local IDD calling cards to call any international calls if needed. Find cheap prices but test the line to make sure there is no distortion or lag experienced in the call.
Many telco companies now have Internet bundled with standard calls, so try to get the best rates by studying every telco before subscribing! Always look for FREE calling, followed by the speed of the Internet connection (must be broadband), instead of looking at those freebies first. If you are not careful, your calls will cost even more than that damn netbook freebie they provide. BE VERY WARY!
Learn what’s VOIP about. It’s providing calling features over the Internet, which allows you to save on the phone bills because Internet charges are usually fixed.

VOIP
From Wikipedia:
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.
Because of the bandwidth efficiency and low costs that VoIP technology can provide, businesses are gradually beginning to migrate from traditional copper-wire telephone systems to VoIP systems to reduce their monthly phone costs.
